One day in Paris

Paris isn't a huge city unlike many of the world's other capitals. When the weather cooperates, it is best to take to its streets by bike or foot. As much as it is an excellent system, much is missed by griming out in the Metro. This is a day of strolling around the city. Lots of photo clichés, but hey not my fault this place receives a gazillion tourist each year.

The apartmentbound head to bask like lizards in the public spaces, of the more popular basking spots are the gardens of Luxembourg Palace, which houses the French senate. The petanque court/field thingymabob is also a good spot to chill and watch the regulars do their thing.

So grab yourself a chair and soak up the sun. The next photo is rather normalish, so I tried out some post processing technique. Michael Orton applied this effect with slide film using two layers of an identical image, although the one layer is very sharp, and the other is quite soft. So an Orton effect to add some interest to the sun soaker uppers in Luxembourg gardens. It looks like it came out of granny's box of photos, well, except for the coloured bits ;)

Reflections in the gardens.

From Luxembourg it is a gentle stroll downhill towards Notre Dame. The best thing about here is perhaps the small garden market alongside metro Cité, the beautiful justice buildings and a hop across the bridge to Ile St Louis.

Instead of hopping across the bridge, we headed in the other direction past Pont Neuf towards the Louvre museum.

Pont des Arts is a pedestrian bridge the connects left and right alongside the Louvre. The place to meet up and hang out.

Into the courtyard at the Louvre and then to the pyramid. Love it or hate it, you have to admit it makes for some interesting pictures.

Below the view from the head of the gardens of the Tuileries. The most central of 'parks' in Paris, connecting Place de la Concorde with the Louvre. Not the first view I'll give you of the famous scaffolding.

And in the gardens of the Tuileries there are ponds, and in the ponds there are ducks. I like ducks.

And because I like them a second one, or maybe it's the same one.... difficult to tell.

Standing near Place de la Concorde, sun now gone, the beautiful Tour Eiffel begged a photo or two. The slightest waxing crescent moon being lit up by the spotlight on the tower (look at the large photo)

and yes, another one of the tower, the same tower for sure. It's beautiful, I couldn't help it.

Final one of Eiffel tower, I promise! Well actually it isn't. This is a photo of a UV lens filter in my hand, in which the tower is reflected. I think it's cool, has an old image-circle-on-the-film-plate kind of feel to it.

Later that evening we returned to play with the lights of the Louvre... and then velib'ed home at some strange hour.

There you have a day in Paris on foot and bike. Wishing you some beauty in your surrounds that can distract you from the exercise you're doing.

Phewy...

A weekend ago, the bustle of Paris was left behind for the countryside. Great to take in some fresh air, even if it does smell like cow bum out there right now...

treehole

Wishing you fresh air.

The Blues

Maybe I was wrong about that whole diesel particulate pollution theory, it seems I've not been helping at all to stop grilling the earth. Here in Europe, the winter has been mild and the last week or two has be beautiful with clear skies. No doubt, just Mother Nature's way of getting all those little over-anxious buds and animals out there so she can kill them off with a cold snap. That will teach them, well actually it won't, they will be dead already, so it will teach those around them. Hmm, who weren't over-anxious to start with, so... nobody will learn anything. Mother Nature is just cruel. Oh well, we knew that already, but she does it because she loves us. So am I being cruel by driving, alone, everyday? HHhhhhmmmmmm... Nah!

We need a bit more of Mother Nature in the worlds' administrations. Today I heard that the States wrote-off 53 gazillions in municipal debt to save their flailing economy. Pray tell, how does this help? Economies go up and come down, to go back up again, just chill - this isn't a movie, we're not all going to die. Throwing cash you don't have at the problem, that is amplified in the minds of the hysterical and by sensation hunting 24 hour news channels, is just delaying and worsening it. By not tightening your belts a little no one learns anything. That's not true, in fact the banks have learnt recently that if you take financially dubious decisions to boost your CEO's short-term bonus and then land in the crap, it's OK, the tax payer will bail you out. So as a consumer/taxpayer, not only do we have to pay exorbitant fees for non-existent service, but we also have to support the absurd bonuses and then pay for your incompetence... nice! I say bring on Mother Nature's cold snap - just a little reality check.

Enough singing the blues. Instead, here are some blues that actually make me smile instead.

农历新年 - Happy New Year... again

The year of the rat is upon us, and to celebrate, half of Paris decided to follow us down to the 13th where dragons and lions took to the streets, and of course the obligatory crackers filled the air. Was good fun, maybe not for the claustrophobic amongst us, nor perhaps if you're that guy bending over at the back of the dragon, but hey, even dragons need backsides.

Hmmm, that's not very Chinese, seems like the Thai got in on the act a too, good excuse for a party. They did add a certain elegance.

A sparkly dragon:

No not another dragon, she actually looked quite sweet.

A little Lion, furry one

and a green-eyed one

and what seems like a dragon impersonation

All gone! Post party streets...

Have a wonderful year of the rat.

p.s. not sure about those Chinese letters in the heading, but Wiki says so, so it must be true.
